Greensboro, Ga. – The No. 21 Virginia men’s golf team is in third place following the opening round of play at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. The Cavaliers shot 9-under 279 at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee. Purdue leads the 13-team field at 11-under 277 and host Kennesaw State is second at 278.

The Cavaliers were led by a trio of players who shot under par. Junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) topped that group by shooting 4-under 68, posting five birdies against a single bogey during his round. Bard is tied for fifth place after the first 18 holes.

Virginia junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) are tied for seventh, one shot behind Bard.

Freshman Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) is in 37th place after finishing at 1-over 73. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out UVA’s scoring with a 76. He’s tied for 56th along with UVA senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.), who is competing as an individual.

Baylor’s Matthew Perrine and Purdue’s Luis Fernando Barco lead the field at 7-under 65.

The second round of the tournament is set for Monday and the final round takes place Tuesday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
