CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 13 Virginia (13-9, 8-5 ACC) women’s tennis team kicked off the weekend with a bang, posting a 6-1 victory over Pittsburgh (7-12, 1-12 ACC) on Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center.

Virginia grabbed the doubles point to take the early lead and then picked up singles wins from No. 2 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), No. 15 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), No. 78 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) and Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) on the way to the win.

The Cavaliers got off to the quick start, picking up 6-2 wins on courts one and three in doubles. The pairing of Elbaba and Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.) got the first win on court three before the Virginia locked up the doubles point with the victory by No. 22 Collins and Kelley on court one.

Collins extended the Cavaliers with a quick match on court one in singles, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Audrey Ann Blakely.

Nauta continued to build on the lead with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Carina Ma on court three, while Kelley clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Callie Frey on court four.

Virginia’s lead grew as Mercer rallied on court six to post a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gabriela Rezende. Elbaba then gave the Cavaliers a sixth point with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court two over Lolade Ogungbesan.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, closing out the regular season with Senior Day celebrations against No. 51 Notre Dame. The match begins at 10 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center and admission to all matches is free.
