CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia volleyball head coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced that Chino Anukwuem (East Hanover, N.J.) to a National Letter of Intent to join the Cavaliers for the 2016 season.
Anukwuem makes the sixth signee for the class, joining Kiley Banker, Jane Horner, Kelsey Miller, Caroline Scrafford and Jennifer Wineholt who signed during the early signing period.
“We are very excited that Chino has decided to attend the University of Virginia,” Hohenshelt said. “We started the recruiting process pretty late with her but I feel like we have found a diamond in the rough. She is a quick blocker with one of the quickest first steps in blocking that I have seen. She is a great athlete with a big jump and I can’t wait to get in the gym with her and continue her volleyball development.”
Anukwuem was a four-year varsity starter at Hanover Park High School. A three-time First Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference honoree, Anukwuem led the team in kills and blocks. The talented 6-foot, middle blocker competed as part of the 42nd AAU Junior National Volleyball Championship and was selected by USA Volleyball for the A1 High Performance camp her freshman year. Also a solid performer in the classroom, Anukwuem was nominated for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Award.
