New London, N.C. – The No. 24 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for third place after the opening round of the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers opened play at the 54-hole tournament by shooting 1-under 287 in rainy conditions that included a 33-minute weather delay. No. 12 Clemson leads the field at 15-under 273 followed by No. 11 Wake Forest at 11-under 277.

The Cavaliers share third place with No. 7 Florida State, No. 20 Duke, Georgia Tech and Louisville.

UVA was led by junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) who shot 2-under 70. Playing in the ACC Championships for the first time, Stanger finished strong with birdies on No. 17 and 18 after playing the first 16 holes at even par.

Junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted the Cavaliers’ next best round at 1-under 71 to finish the day in 13th place. Freshmen Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) and Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) are tied for 24th place at 1-over 73. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out UVA’s scoring with a 75 and is in 43rd place.

Wake Forest’s Paul McBride had the tournament’s best opening round, shooting 6-under 66.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. UVa will be paired with Georgia Tech and Duke during the second round and will tee off starting at 10:30 a.m. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.

ESPN3 will broadcast coverage starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The ACC Championships also signify the men’s golf matchup between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. One point is at stake in the all-sports rivalry series between the two schools. UVA currently leads the 2015-16 point standings 10 to 5. Virginia Tech finished the first round of the ACC Championships in 11th place at 16-over 304.
