Virginia Drops Series Opener At Virginia Tech 2-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – An unearned run in the fourth inning proved to be the difference on Friday night as Virginia (18-31, 7-12 ACC) fell to Virginia Tech (26-27, 11-11 ACC) by a score of 2-1 in the opener of the weekend series.
The two teams will conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday (April 30).
Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) took the loss for the Cavaliers, allowing the two runs – one of them earned – on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in her 6.0 innings of work. Osherow is now 13-20 on the season.
Maggie Tyler (20-17) picked up the win, allowing the one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Virginia Tech scored first, pushing a run home with a one-out double in the first inning. The hit to the wall in right center from Katey Smith scored Olivia Lattin from first. Virginia would then record back-to-back outs to get out of the inning down only 1-0.
An error in the fourth inning kept things alive on a ground ball to third with two outs, loading the bases for the Hokies. Virginia Tech capitalized on the next play as a ball up the middle was fielded behind the bag at second, but the throw was off the mark as the home team moved out to the 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the sixth inning when Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) doubled to center field, driving in Allie Arneson (Aledo, Texas) from third. Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) was out on the play trying to go from first to third as the Hokies made a precise throw for the out at the bag.
Virginia Tech held the Cavaliers in check in the seventh inning as Virginia fell in the series opener.
The weekend series is part of the Commonwealth Clash between Virginia and Virginia Tech.
