Franklin, Tenn. – The No. 26 Virginia men’s golf team used its best single-round score in NCAA Regional history to make a major move up the leaderboard during the second round at Vanderbilt’s Legends Club. UVA shot 17-under 271 to climb into second place after 36 holes with a two-day total of 20-under 556.
Second-ranked Texas also shot 17-under 271 and stands atop the 13-team field at 37-under 539. The top five teams from the six regional championship sites move on to the NCAA Championships. After two rounds, LSU is in third place at 560 while Vanderbilt and Kennesaw State share fourth place at 562. Entering Wednesday’s final round, Washington is in sixth place at 563.
Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) continued to lead UVa after posting a second-round score of 4-under 68 for the second consecutive day. He is tied for sixth place overall at 8-under 136. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) also shot 68 and moved up to 17th place at 4-under 140.
After carding a disappointing round of 5-over 77 to open the tournament, Virginia junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) rebounded to lead the Cavaliers’ charge during the second round. He shot 6-under 66, making five birdies over a six-hole stretch during his opening nine holes.
Freshman Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) posted UVA’s other counting score on the day, finishing at 3-under 69. That stands as his lowest round as a collegiate. Classmate Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) rounded out UVA’s scoring with a 72. Poole, Walsh and Bard are tied for 29th place at 1-under 143.
The Cavaliers’ four scoring players combined for 19 birdies and just two bogeys during the second round.
Texas’ Doug Ghim and James Madison’s Ryan Cole share the individual lead at 11-under 133, one shot better than the next three players in the field.
The Cavaliers will be paired with Texas and LSU during Wednesday’s round. Those three schools tee off starting at 8:45 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.
