Eugene, Ore. – The No. 15 Virginia women’s golf team battled back over its closing holes to finish the second round of the NCAA Championships in 15th place. UVA turned in a second-round score of 6-over 294 for a 36-hole total of 11-over 587.

The Cavaliers managed just four birdies over their first 14 holes, but got hot down the stretch. UVA’s four scoring players had seven birdies over their final four holes to move back into contention to make the cut after Sunday’s third round.

Following 54 holes of play, the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on those teams, advance to the final round of medal play. From there an individual champion is crowned and the top eight teams move on to match play to decide the national champion.

Virginia was led by senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) who shot 2-under 70. She moved up to 33rd place at 1-over 145 after 36 holes. Szokol bookended four birdies with two bogeys during her round.

ACC individual champion Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) birdied three of her last four holes to post an even round score of 72 for the second consecutive day. She leads UVA on the leaderboard in 26th place at even par 144.

Freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) carded a score of 3-over 75 and is in 67th place at 148. Both freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) and junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) shot 77 and are tied for 94th overall at 151.

Second-ranked USC shot 8-under 280 to take the overall lead at 7-under 569. Washington occupies second place at 574 followed by UCLA (577) and Stanford (578) as Pac-12 teams dominate the top of the scoreboard.

UVA will tee off at 3 p.m. ET to play its third round. The Cavaliers will be paired with Florida State and Ohio State and will start on the first hole.
