Eugene, Ore. – Virginia’s Derek Bard tied for 17th in the individual competition at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Bard shot 2-over 72 during Monday’s final round and posted a 72-hole total of 5-over 285. Oregon’s Aaron Wise, playing on his home course at the Eugene Country Club, claimed the individual title at 5-under 275.

Bard’s finish was the fifth best by a UVA player at the NCAA Championships.

The Cavalier junior advanced to the final round of medal play after being one of the top nine individuals not associated with the 15 teams that made the 54-hole cut.

Bard had rounds of 72, 70, 71 and 72 in his second NCAA Championships appearance. He finished 69th at last year’s tournament in Bradenton, Fla. and did not advance to the final round of stroke play.

During his final round, Bard suffered a double bogey on his second hole but got back to even with birdies on No. 3 and No. 4. He posted a bogey on No. 6 and his final birdie on No. 8 to make the turn at even par. He made par on his first six holes on the back nine before finishing with bogeys on the 16th and 18th holes.

Bard helped the Cavaliers to a 22nd-place finish in the team competition.

Bard will play in the USGA’s U.S. Open Tournament June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
