Charlottesville, Va. – Rising senior men’s golfer Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and 2015 UVA graduate Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) will begin play at the USGA’s U.S. Open Championship on Thursday at Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh.

McCarthy will be in the first group to play the course. He tees off at 6:45 a.m. from the first tee and is paired with Aron Price and Mikael Lundberg. All three of those competitors are among the 27 players who made it into this year’s tournament through qualifying tournaments.

Bard is scheduled to start his round at 1:14 p.m. ET from the 10th tee. He is playing with Australian’s Cameron Smith and Steven Bowditch. Smith finished fourth at the 2015 U.S. Open. Bard is one of 11 amateur players competing in this year’s tournament.

Bard made his way into the field as an automatic qualifier after finishing as the runner-up at the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship. It marks his second appearance at one of the Majors this year after playing in the Masters in April. He failed to make the 36-hole cut after posting a two-day total of 9-over 153. He tied for 69th place and posted the third-best score of the six amateurs in the field. Bard missed the cut (6-over, 150) by three strokes.

McCarthy is participating in the U.S. Open for the second consecutive year. He advance last year through a sectional qualifier and managed to make the cut at Chambers Bay in Tacoma, Wash., tying for 42nd place.

This year McCarthy advanced to Oakmont by shooting 6-under 138 at the sectional qualifying tournament held at Woodmont Country Club’s North Course in his hometown of Rockville, Md. He survived a 3-for-2 playoff to punch his ticket into the field.

McCarthy is no stranger to the USGA ranks. In 2014, he helped the USA claim the World Amateur Team Championship in Japan. He reached the semifinals of the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship and was a member of the 2015 USA Walker Cup Team.

On Friday, McCarthy’s group tees off at 12:30 p.m. from the No. 10 tee while Bard’s paring starts at 7:29 a.m. from the first tee.
