Lucas Mendes, an incoming freshman for the #UVAMSOC team, was honored Tuesday at the Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year awards ceremony in Los Angeles prior to attending the ESPY awards on Wednesday. Mendes was named the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year for men’s soccer earlier this year. Mendes and the awards winners from several other sports were feted at an awards dinner attended by several pro sports stars, including Cam Newton, Abby Wambach, Landon Donovan, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jennie Finch before also walking the red carpet and attending the live telecast of the ESPN awards show.

The USWNT is featuring former #UVAWSOC player Becky Sauerbrunn in one of the first installments of its #OneNationOneTeam campaign leading up to the Rio Olympics in which Sauerbrunn and teammate Julie Johnston describe one another and talk about the bond between teammates.
