Cavalier Men Announce 2016 Cross Country Schedule

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia men’s cross country team announced its 2016 schedule Friday (July 29). The Cavaliers will host three meets at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, including the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
“Our schedule is created to allow our teams to perform the best during the championship phase of the year,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “We don’t shy away from competition and love the opportunity to compete three times at home, so we feel our schedule is perfect.”
“I am excited about our schedule,” UVA men’s cross country coach Pete Watson said. “Our Panorama Farms Invite has become one of the most competitive early-season meets in the country and Penn State has put together a great field with teams from every region in the country, so there will be plenty of opportunities to earn at-large points for the NCAA meet.”
The Virginia men open the season at home with the UVA Duals on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. Virginia will run against Liberty and Norfolk State.
The Cavaliers will next compete at the adidas XC Challenge in Cary, N.C., on Sept. 16 before hosting the annual Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. UVA will once again face stiff competition as defending men’s NCAA champion Syracuse, BYU, Coastal Carolina and William & Mary are among the teams running.
“Panorama Farms is an incredible place to compete and we continue to improve the meet each year with new competitive universities attending,” Fetzer said. “This might be the best since my arrival. The crowds have been amazing and I expect with this being the All-Sports Reunion weekend, we may have an even larger amount this year. In addition, we are hosting an alumni event that evening.”
Virginia will head to State College, Pa., for the Penn State National Open on Oct. 14. The meet will feature the host Nittany Lions, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Villanova and Virginia Tech.
“The Penn State meet will be a great opportunity to see some of the best out of region competition,” Fetzer said. “It also provides a chance for the family and friends of our student-athletes from the north to see them compete closer to home. The northeast has been good to us over the last few years with regards to recruiting.”
The postseason begins with the ACC Championships, which will be held Oct. 28 in Cary, N.C. (same site of the adidas XC Challenge). The 2015 Cavalier men finished third at the conference meet.
For the third time in four years, UVA will host the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships at Panorama Farms on Nov. 11 at noon. The meet serves as one of nine regional meets to determine the field for the NCAA Championships, which will be held Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Admission to all home Virginia cross country meets is free.
