RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil–Former Virginia field hockey player Michelle Vittese scored as the United States field hockey team defeated Australia, 2-1, Monday morning in Pool B play at the Rio Olympics.

Vittese (Class of 2013) scored off a penalty corner to give the Americans the lead in the 25th minute. Caitlin Van Sickle doubled the lead for Team USA in 41st minute, before the Australians scored in 43rd minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Neither team scored in the final period.

The Americans now have the maximum six points from their first two matches in Pool B play. Next up, Team USA faces Japan on Wednesday (Aug. 10) at 4 p.m.
