Connecticut Open Website | Tournament Draws

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), two of the most storied players in Virginia women’s tennis program history, begin competition in the qualifying rounds of the Connecticut Open on Friday (Aug. 19).

The tournament is held at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. The event is a WTA Premier Event with $761,000 total prize money on the line as one of the top events outside of the Grand Slam events.

The duo of Collins and Elbaba helped lead the Cavaliers to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2016, while Collins claimed the NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship for the second time in three seasons in May.

The qualifying rounds of the event will be played Friday and Saturday with the first round of play beginning on Sunday (Aug. 22).

Collins will face Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland at 10 a.m., while Elbaba will face Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine. Elbaba will be playing in a US Open National Playoffs qualifying match earlier in the morning.
