CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Rising sophomore Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) highlights a collection of current and former Virginia women’s tennis players competing at the US Open National Playoffs this weekend.

The winners’ of the men’s and women’s singles championships earn a wild card berth into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, while the winners of the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles championships earn a wild card berth into the main draw of the US Open in their respective event.

The tournament runs Aug. 19-27 in conjunction with the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, the final Emirates Airline US Open Series women’s event of the summer.

Kelley will pair with Veronica Corning in the doubles draw. The duo advanced to the National Playoffs by virtue of winning the Northeast Sectional. The women’s doubles portion of the competition runs Aug. 20-24.

In singles, former Cavalier Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) opened competition on Friday (Aug. 19). Elbaba advanced to the National Playoffs by claiming the Eastern Sectional as the top-seed from the region. Elbaba defeated Margaryta Bilokin 6-4, 6-1 on Friday. She will now face Jacqueline Cako in the second round.

In mixed doubles, former Cavalier Caroline (Hammond) Varga pairs with her husband, Chris, after claiming the Midwest Sectional played in South Bend, Ind. Mixed doubles action runs August 24-27.

The US Open singles qualifying tournament begins on Aug. 23 (Tuesday), while the US Open Doubles Championships begins on Tuesday, August 30. Mixed doubles competition at the US Open begins on Wednesday, August 31.
