Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 14 Virginia men’s golf team will start its 2016-17 season this weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga. The three-day, 43-hold tournament runs Friday through Sunday at the par 72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club.

The 14-team field includes Florida, LSU, Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Memphis, Kennesaw State, North Florida, Chattanooga and Dalton State.

The Cavaliers enter the event ranked No. 14 in the Golfweek preseason standings.

UVA is led by seniors Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.). Bard is ranked No. 19 in Golfweek’s preseason poll of the nation’s top 30 players. Both players earned All-ACC honors last year and Bard was named a third-team All-American.

Bard led UVA last season with a 71.23 stroke average while Stanger was second at 71.79.

Rounding out UVA’s lineup is junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.), sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) and freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.). All four returning players were in UVA’s lineup at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Auburn is the Carpet Capital Collegiate defending champions. Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com.
