Dalton, Ga. – The Virginia men’s golf team opened its season in impressive fashion, shooting 12-under 276 during the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga. The Cavaliers finished the first day tied with defending tournament champion Auburn for first place.

Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) led the Hoos by firing 5-under 67 and finished the opening round in second place. His round included a team-high seven birdies to go along with two bogeys. Junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) used an eagle on the 15th hole to finish his first round at 3-under 69. He stood in 10th place on the leaderboard.

A trio of UVA players shot 2-under 70 to end the first round tied for 16th place. That group included senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) and freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.).

The second round of the tournament is set for Saturday and the final round takes place Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
