CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s tennis team had five singles players, two doubles teams and the top-ranked newcomer in the preseason rankings released today (Sept. 13) by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.), who last weekend won the men’s singles championship at the American Collegiate Invitational Tournament as part of the U.S. Open, is No. 4 in the preseason singles rankings. Last year, Kwiatkowski was ranked No. 7 in the preseason rankings, No. 2 at the beginning of the spring season and finished the year at No. 7.

Kwiatkowski and partner senior Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) are No. 11 in the preseason doubles rankings.

Other players receiving a preseason singles ranking were junior Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) at No. 19, junior Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) at No. 53, senior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) at No. 69 and junior Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) at No. 74.

Aragone and Wiersholm are ranked No. 40 in doubles.

Freshman Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) was named the top player in the National Freshman/Newcomer rankings. Soderlund reached a career-high ATP ranking this summer of No. 418 after advancing to the semifinals of the Bastad Challenger as well as moving on to the second round of the ATP 250 Swedish Open.

Aragone and Corinteli will be representing Virginia this weekend at the Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational, a three-day event that is the ITA’s first-ever grass court tournament and the Tennis Hall of Fame’s first-ever collegiate event.
