Salandy-Defour Named ACC Co-Offensive Player of Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ÃÆ’¢Ãƒ¢’¬” Virginia senior forward Marcus Salandy-Defour (Kensington, Md.) has been tabbed as the ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, as announced today by the conference office. Salandy-Defour shares the distinction with Louisville forward Mohamed Thiaw.

This marks Salandy-Defour’s first career ACC Player of the Week honor.

After suffering an offseason knee injury, Salandy-Defour returned to the pitch last week and made an immediate impact as Virginia scored six goals in two matches. He started UVA’s matches last week against VCU and then-No. 6 Clemson, scoring a pair of goals Saturday against Clemson.

Salandy-Defour started and played 32 minutes in his first match back on Wednesday against VCU, a 3-0 Virginia victory.

Just 81 seconds into the Clemson match, Salandy-Defour parlayed a turnover into a breakaway and beat the goalkeeper. In the second half with UVA trailing 3-1, he made a run to the top of the box and ripped a low shot to score his second goal of the match and record his first career brace. UVA came back to draw Clemson, 3-3.

The Cavaliers (3-1-2, 0-1-1 ACC) rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a result for the first time since Nov. 15, 2013, in the ACC semifinals against Notre Dame.

The No. 16 Cavaliers continue ACC play at 7 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 24) with their first-ever trip to No. 13 Louisville.
