CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s lacrosse head coach Julie Myers announced that fourth-years Maggie Preas (Rockville, Md.), Katherine Rueger (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and Posey Valis (Baltimore, Md.) have been named captains for the 2017 season.

“After a solid start to Fall Ball, the team voted for three fourth-year captains to lead the way on and off the field,” Myers said. “Maggie Preas has been a cornerstone of our defense since her first year. Posey Valis made a move out of the midfield and into attack during her third year and emerged as a reliable, tough-nosed leader for us. Katherine Rueger leads by example in every setting.”

Preas was named to the IWLCA All-South Region Team after starting all 18 games on defense. The All-ACC Second-Team selection finished the year with 16 caused turnovers, 35 draw controls and 23 ground balls for UVA.

A two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, Rueger has played in five games in her career at UVA.

Valis led the UVA offense, tying for a team-high with 41 points on 35 goals and six assists. Valis scored multiple goals in 10 games and had at least one goal in 17 games.

“All three captains are successful students, athletes and leaders,” Myers added. “I think they will be an asset to our team in how hard they work, how inclusively they lead and in their passion and love for their teammates and for Virginia Lacrosse.”

Virginia will begin its fall scrimmages this week, hosting Richmond on Wednesday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. at the University Hall Turf Field.
