Virginia Plays Host to Hofstra Tuesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The Virginia men’s soccer team plays host to red-hot Hofstra Tuesday night (Oct. 4) at Klöckner Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Virginia-Hofstra Series
Virginia and Hofstra have met only once previously, a 4-2 Cavaliers’ win on Sept. 7, 2008, at Klöckner Stadium. Tony Tchani, now playing with the Columbus Crew of MLS, scored two goals in the win for UVA.

Defense Bounces Back
Virginia has recorded clean sheets in each of its last two matches, including all 110 minutes in the double-overtime match Friday against Virginia Tech. UVA gave up six goals on Sept. 24 against Louisville, but has not conceded in its last 227 minutes of play.

Busy, Tough Schedule for Hoos
Virginia is in the midst of its busiest stretch of the season, playing nine matches in a 28-day stretch. UVA travels to No. 4 North Carolina Friday. It marks the fifth straight top-20 opponent the Cavaliers will see in ACC play. The Cavaliers also play host to No. 2 Notre Dame next Friday (Oct. 14). The Cavaliers then are back for three straight home matches beginning next Tuesday.

Seven of the nine opponents in this stretch are against teams with winning record, including four against top-25 foes (Louisville, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Notre Dame).

Cavaliers in Midst of Bevy of Home Matches
Playing in its 25th season at Klöckner Stadium, Virginia will stay home for the majority of its remaining schedule. The Cavaliers play five of their final seven regular-season matches at home. UVA is 3-0-3 at home this year and 260-52-22 in 25 years at Klöckner.

Depth Comes into Play Again
Both teams played tough matches over the weekend, and depth figures to be key on Tuesday. Virginia has shown off its deep roster and a more aggressive attack this season, playing at least 17 men in all but one contest this year. The one came last Friday when UVA used four off the bench. Hofstra played six off the bench Saturday in its win at Delaware. UVA used 21 players in wins against Coastal Carolina, VCU and Cornell. With 13 newcomers to the program, UVA has utilized eight different starting lineups in its nine matches.

Noting Hofstra
Hofstra is 6-3-1 this year and leads the Colonial Athletic Association at 4-0-0 after winning at Delaware (2-1) on Saturday night, the Pride’s fourth straight victory. Hofstra is up to No. 28 in the latest RPI. Danny Elliott leads the team with five goals, while the Pride has allowed just two goals in its last seven matches. Hofstra reached the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and returns eight starters from its team which finished with a 12-6-1 record, including road wins over the then-No. 1 (Creighton) and No. 2 (Notre Dame) ranked teams in the nation.
