Derek Bard The Virginia men’s golf team is in third place after the opening round of play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The Cavaliers shot 8-under 280 and trail tournament leader Missouri by three shots.

UVA was led by senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) who shot 6-under 66 and is tied for second place. Bard posted a clean round, recording four birdies and one eagle. It was his best 18-hole score in two years.

Bard trails UNC Wilmington’s Thomas Eldridge by one shot at the top of the leaderboard.

Cavalier senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) also finished under par. Stanger shot 70 and is in 14th place while Walsh posted a score of 71 and is 22nd overall. Freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) finished with a 73 to end the round 34th while junior Danny Walker (Brandenton, Fla.) shot 74 to stand 47th.

Freshman Nathan Chuwait (Herndon, Va.), who is competing as an individual, also shot 74. The tournament marks his collegiate debut.
