Jonesborough, Tenn. – The Virginia men’s golf team shot 19-under 269 to grab the lead at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate after 36 holes of play. UVa’s second-round score was just two shots off the school record for 18 holes of play. The Cavaliers enter Sunday’s final round at 27-under 549, 11 shots ahead of second-place Missouri.

All five of UVA’s players posted under-par scores on Saturday.

UVA was led in the second round by the 7-under performance of sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.). He started his round with four consecutive birdies, and then added another birdie and eagle on his back nine to post his lowest score as a collegiate.

Walsh moved up to sixth place on the leaderboard after opening with a 1-under 71.

Cavalier senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) moved into first place thanks to a second round 5-under 67. After 36 holes, he stands at 11-under 133. Bard had five birdies on his front nine before recording his first bogey of the tournament on his 28th overall hole. He is one shot ahead of Penn State’s Charles Huntzinger.

Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) also occupies a top-10 spot on the leaderboard. He shot 4-under 68 and is at 6-under 138, good for 10th place.

Freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) is in 23rd place at 2-under 142 after shooting 69. Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) moved into 40th position at 145 with a second-round score of 71. Freshman Nathan Chuwait (Herndon, Va.), playing as an individual competitor, is in 67th place at 150. He had a second-round score of 76.

The Hoos are looking to win the tournament for the second time. UVA finished first in 2013 with a score of 22-under 842.
