No. 21 Virginia Faces William & Mary Tuesday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The No. 21 Virginia men’s soccer team wraps up its three-match homestand at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 18) when it entertains William & Mary at Klöckner Stadium. Coming off a win over No. 2 Notre Dame last Friday, Virginia is unbeaten in its last six matches as it heads into its final non-conference match of the regular season.

Virginia-William & Mary Series
Virginia holds a 14-8-4 all-time record against William & Mary, but the Tribe has won the last three meetings. UVA’s last win against William & Mary came on Sept. 26, 2001, a 1-0 triumph at Klöckner Stadium. The sides have not played in 13 years. They last faced off on Sept. 24, 2003, at Klöckner Stadium, where the Cavaliers fell to the Tribe, 3-2.

UVA Looks to Keep Up Solid Play at Home
Virginia is unbeaten (5-0-4) on its home pitch at Klöckner Stadium this season. UVA has outscored its opponents 16-6 at home this year. Now in its 73rd year of men’s soccer, Virginia is playing its 25th season of soccer at Klöckner Stadium. UVA has a 262-52-24 record at the venerable facility.

Big Wins Over Top-5 Teams
With consecutive ACC wins over then-No. 4 North Carolina and No. 2 Notre Dame, UVA scored back-to-back wins over top-five ACC opponents for the first time since Sept. 13 and 21, 2003, when it picked up a 2-1 win over No. 3 Wake Forest and a 1-0 victory over No. 4 UNC, respectively. All six of UVA’s ACC opponents to this point are ranked among the national top 20.

Cavaliers Move Up in RPI
UVA moved up to No. 8 in the latest NCAA RPI. Of UVA’s 13 games to this point this season, 10 have come against top-50 RPI teams.

William & Mary is No. 88 in the new RPI.

Caldwell Comes Up Big Again
Named the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week last week, Jeff Caldwell backed it up with another strong week. In the win Friday over Notre Dame, he matched a career high with seven saves while recording his fifth shutout of the year.

Caldwell now has earned 12 career shutouts, which ranks 10th in program history.

Cavaliers on Six-Game Unbeaten Streak
Virginia is unbeaten in its last six matches, dating to a tough defeat at Louisville on Sept. 24. Since that match, UVA has outscored its foes 9-2 while going 4-0-2.

The stretch has featured top competition, with five of the six matches coming against teams currently in the RPI top-50.

Noting William & Mary
William & Mary is 7-5-2, including a 1-3-2 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tribe scored a 4-0 home win over Michigan on Saturday night. Antonio Bustamante and Ryder Bell each have seven goals and four assists, while William Eskay and Reeves Trott each own four goals this year. The Tribe has outscored its opponents 28-16 this season.
