CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia field hockey team (11-5, 3-2 ACC) hosts No. 7 Louisville (13-3, 2-3 ACC) on Friday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.
Admission is free for all regular-season home games at Turf Field.
Live stats will be available through the GameTracker link on VirginiaSports.com as well as being available through the Virginia Game Day app. The game will also stream live as an ACC Network Extra game online on ESPN3 and on the WatchESPN app.
Virginia comes into the game having won seven of its last eight games, including each of its last three games, and is in the hunt for a share of the ACC regular-season title. If North Carolina (3-2) defeats Duke (4-1) when the two teams play on Saturday and Virginia defeats Louisville, the ACC regular season will end in a four-way tie for first place, with Syracuse (4-2), which has already concluded conference play, also included in that deadlock. In 2014, the Cavaliers and Tar Heels finished in a tie for the ACC regular-season title with UVA earning the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament based on tiebreakers.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night at Richmond. Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored two goals with two assists against the Spiders. Vittese has moved up to second in the ACC in points per game, averaging 1.81 per game.
Senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored two goals at Richmond, her third multi-goal performance of the season. Both Tata and Vittese have 43 career goals, tied for 10th in the UVA record book.
Sophomore goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) leads the conference with a 5.83 saves per game average. Lucas is third in the ACC and fifth in the nation with a .769 save percentage.
Lucas and Vittese earned ACC Player of the Week honors with Lucas being named the co-defensive player and Vittese shared the offensive accolade. It was the first player of the week award for Lucas and the second of the season for Vittese.
The Cavaliers and Cardinals both picked up big ACC victories last weekend with UVA downing No. 2 Syracuse in overtime, 1-0, while the Cardinals defeated No. 3 North Carolina, 1-0, in regulation. Senior Erin McCrudden’s goal in the second half proved to be the only scoring in the UNC game while sophomore Ayeisha McFerran collected four saves in her sixth shutout of the season.
The Cards are led offensively by freshman Minout Mink who is also tied for second in the ACC with 12 goals and 27 points. McFerran leads the nation with a .806 save percentage while leading the ACC and standing second in the nation with a 0.89 goals against average.
Virginia leads the all-time series, 6-1, including a 4-3 victory last year at Louisville.
Up next, Virginia will head to College Park, Md., on Tuesday, Oct. 25, taking on No. 5 Maryland at 4 p.m. before returning home to host No. 17 James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. in the regular-season finale.
