CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team (12-7, 3-3 ACC) will face Boston College (10-8, 3-3 ACC) in the first round of the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship, on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. The tournament is being held Nov. 3-6 at Wake Forest’s Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The entire tournament will be broadcast to a national television audience on the channels of the ACC Regional Sports Networks. The games will also be streamed live online on the ESPN3/WatchESPN platforms. Live stats will be available through the ACC Tournament Central website with links to all of these amenities posted on VirginiaSports.com.

The sixth-seeded Cavaliers will be taking on third-seeded Boston College in the final game of the opening day of the tournament. The winner of that match-up will advance to take on either Syracuse or Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 4 at 3:30 p.m. The championship match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.

Virginia is looking for its first-ever ACC Tournament title. The Cavaliers have made six appearances in the championship game, most recently in 2009.

Virginia moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll. Boston College also moved up one place to No. 11.

After back-to-back one-goal losses against top-10 teams, No. 7 Louisville and No. 3 Maryland, the Cavaliers closed out the regular season with a 3-2 victory over James Madison, which is ranked No. 20 in this week’s NFHCA poll.

Senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her 11th goal of the season against the Dukes. Tata has scored at least one goal in each of the last four games. Tata also has 97 career points, three shy of joining the 100-point club. Senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) is also nearing 100 career points with 95 on 31 goals and 33 assists, with seven goals and seven assists this season.

Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) picked up her team-leading 30th point of the season against the Dukes, assisting on Tata’s goal. Vittese, who has scored 11 goals with eight assists this season, comes into the week with 120 points in her three-year career.

The Cavaliers lead the all-time series against the Eagles, 11-8, including a 2-1 overtime victory at BC in September. Hyams scored the game-winner in that contest, scoring on a breakaway 1:24 into overtime.

2016 ACC Field Hockey Championship single tickets are $5 (Thursday and Friday tickets are good for all games that are played that day). Children 18 and under get in for free; all others need a ticket.

The NCAA Selection show will stream live online on NCAA.com on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 10 p.m. The Cavaliers have made 20 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and are vying for their ninth in head coach Michele Madison‘s 11 seasons.
