Virginia Hosts Two-Day Double-Dual Against Big Ten Foes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia swimming and diving teams host Big Ten foes Michigan and Penn State in a two-day double-dual meet starting Friday (Nov. 4) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Diving action begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Richmond’s women’s divers will also compete on Friday. Swimming action is set for a 5 p.m. start on Friday and a noon start on Saturday. Live results will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
Admission to all Virginia home meets at the AFC is free. Public parking is available at Slaughter Recreation Center and the parking lot closest to the West Gate at Scott Stadium on a first-come, first-served basis.
Friday’s portion of the meet is a Sabre Rewards event for Virginia students. Starting at 5 p.m., students can sign in with their ID number and receive five Sabre points for this meet. Also, the first 150 students will receive complimentary Domino’s pizza and drinks, courtesy of Pepsi. At every other regular season swimming meet at the AFC this year students can sign in and receive one Sabre point.
The Cavalier women (1-0) have been tabbed No. 6 and the UVA men (1-0) are ranked No. 25 in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA) national poll. Michigan’s women (1-0) are currently ranked No. 1 and the Wolverine men (1-0) are No. 6. Penn State’s women (1-1) are receiving votes, while the PSU men (1-1) are unranked.
This is the third-consecutive year the three schools have faced each other. Last season, the Cavalier women defeated Michigan, 188-165, and Penn State, 238-115, while the UVA men took down PSU, 248-104, but fell to Michigan, 207-135.
The Cavaliers have multiple student-athletes with top-10 NCAA rankings. On the women’s side, senior Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is currently No. 1 in the NCAA rankings in the 1,000-yard freestyle and No. 4 in the 500 free. Fellow senior Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) is No. 7 in the 100 breaststroke. On the men’s side, sophomore Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) is No. 7 in the 200 butterfly, while freshman Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) is No. 9 in the 400 IM.
Next up, the Cavalier divers will compete at the NC State/GAC Diving Invite in Greensboro, N.C. on Nov. 19. The full UVA team will be in action at the Georgia Fall Invitational Dec. 2-4 in Athens, Ga.
