CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The No. 17 Virginia men’s soccer team travels to No. 10 Louisville at 1 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 6) for a quarterfinal match in the 2016 ACC Tournament. Virginia is the tournament’s 6-seed, while Louisville holds the 3-seed.

Noting the ACC Tournament
The advancing team from the UVA-Louisville match moves on to take on the advancing team from the No. 2-seed Wake Forest and No. 7-seed Notre Dame on Wednesday (Nov. 9) on the campus of the top remaining seed.

The championship match will be contested next Sunday (Nov. 13) in Charleston, S.C.

Virginia in the ACC Tournament
Virginia has an all-time record of 40-17-10 (.672) in the ACC tournament. UVA has won a league-high 10 tournament titles (1988, 1991-95, 1997, 2003-04, 2009) and 15 championships overall. Virginia is playing Louisville in the ACC tournament for the first time.

Virginia-Louisville Series
Louisville holds a 2-1 edge in the blossoming series with Virginia. The three matches all have come since 2014. UVA lost 6-1 at Louisville on Sept. 24 in the Cavaliers’ first-ever visit to the Bluegrass State. UVA forward Edward Opoku did not play in that game while nursing an injury.

Stingy Defense
Since allowing six goals on Sept. 24 at Louisville, Virginia has conceded only twice as the Cavaliers have gone on a 10-match unbeaten streak. UVA has not been scored on in its last five matches, dating to an 82nd-minute penalty kick on Oct. 11 against Radford (498 total minutes).

Since the Louisville match, UVA has outscored its foes 14-2 while going 7-0-3, its longest unbeaten streak since an 11-game stretch in 2013.

Caldwell Strong in Goal
Jeff Caldwell is having a standout junior season in goal, with eight shutouts in 16 matches. Now with 17 career shutouts, Caldwell is tied with Tony Meola (1988-89) for fifth in program history, two shy of fourth. He also ranks seventh in single-season program history with nine shutouts, one shy of fourth. His 0.88 career goals-against average currently ranks seventh in the university’s all-time annals. He also stands eighth in program history with 130 saves.

Gelnovatch Approaches UVA Career Wins Record
Now in his 21st year as head coach, George Gelnovatch is one win from the career wins record at Virginia. Gelnovatch owns 294 career wins, one fewer than his predecessor, Bruce Arena, who won 295 matches from 1978-95. Gelnovatch has won at least 10 games in each of his 21 seasons and boasts a career record of 294-119-49. Gelnovatch played for Arena from 1983-86 and was an assistant coach on Arena’s staff from 1989-95.

Tough Schedule
Year in and year out, Virginia plays one of the nation’s toughest schedules, and 2016 has been no different. Thirteen of Virginia’s 17 matches have come against RPI top-100 opponents.

Noting Louisville
Louisville has not played since last Friday (Oct. 28), a 1-0 home defeat against then-No. 5 Clemson. It was one of only two home defeats this year for the Cardinals, who are 7-2-1 on the home pitch at Lynn Stadium. Louisville has surrendered just 10 goals in 17 matches this season. Forward Mohamed Thiaw leads a solid offensive attack and finished the regular season tied for the ACC lead in goals with 11, including a national-best seven game-winners. Tim Kubel leads the ACC with nine assists.
