UVA Women Finish Sixth at NCAA Southeast Regional Championships

EARLYSVILLE, Va.–The Virginia women’s cross country team finished sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships Friday (Nov. 11) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.

The Cavaliers finished sixth with a score of 190 points. No. 2 NC State captured the team title with 53 points, while Louisville also advanced to the NCAA Championships with a second-place score of 163 points. Kentucky was third with 164 points, followed by Furman (168) and Wake Forest (186). The top two teams from each regional meet automatically qualify for NCAAs, while 13 at-large teams are selected Saturday (Nov. 12).

Sophomore Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) was the top finished for the Cavaliers, finishing eighth in a 6,000-meter time of 20:37.3. By way of her finish, Mulhern earned USTFCCCA All-Southeast Region honors for the second year in a row.

“It was a great run by Emily today,” UVA women’s cross country coach Todd Morgan said. “I think she showed that she is taking it to another level and put her in a good spot here at the regional meet and overall.”

Graduate student Sarah Astin (Isle of Man, Great Britain) was next for UVA, finishing 35th overall in 21:31.6, while junior Megan Rebholz (Stafford, Va.) was 37th overall in 21:32.9. Graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) was 45th overall, while freshman Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the scoring five in 69th overall.

“As a group, it was not where we would envision ourselves wanting to be, but it was a step up from two weeks,” Morgan said.
