Virginia Sweeps Louisville on the Road

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Virginia volleyball team (6-21, 3-12 ACC) earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-20) victory over Louisville (9-17, 4-12 ACC) on Friday (Nov. 11) at Cardinal Arena in Louisville, Ky.
Seniors Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.) and Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) tallied 16 kills apiece with both hitting over .500 in the match. Freshman setter Jennifer Wineholt (San Diego, Calif.) had three of the Cavaliers’ seven aces.
“We have played that well at times this season, but just not for a full 75 points,” said Virginia head coach Dennis Hohenshelt. “The kids did a fantastic job of sticking with the game plan. When we needed big swings, Haley and Jasmine were big. To have those two have big matches together takes pressure off everyone else and allows us to play a little more relaxed. In the end, we played pretty well and we finished when we had a chance. I am very happy for our kids who have been through a lot of tough matches and have continued to work day-in and day-out.”
In the first set, Burton capped a 5-0 Virginia run with an ace that gave UVA an early 11-5 lead. After a 6-2 Louisville run put the Cardinals within two, 20-18, redshirt freshman Kat Young (Chantilly, Va.) slammed home a kill. Senior libero Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) followed with an ace to put the Cavaliers up 22-18. Louisville scored three-straight late points, but Kole closed out the set with a kill.
The Cardinals and Cavaliers swapped leads back and forth to start the second set. Trailing 12-11, Wineholt got a kill and then added a pair of aces in a 6-0 run that gave UVA a 17-12 advantage. Louisville scored three-straight to pull within two, 17-15, and used a service error to tie the set, 21-21, but back-to-back kills from Kole put the Cavaliers back in control. Louisville committed a service error and an attack error to finish off the set.
In the third frame, Virginia jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but Louisville came back to tie the set at 12-12. Virginia took back the lead with another 4-1 run, including an ace from freshman Jane Horner (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to take a 17-14 advantage. Louisville got to within one, 18-17, before committing a service error. Trailing 21-19, the Cardinals committed an attack error followed by a huge UVA block from freshman Kiley Banker (West Lafayette, Ind.) and Burton. Burton put Virginia at match point with a kill, but Lousville’s Melanie McHenry countered with one of her own. Kole finished the match with a kill, closing out the sweep for the Cavaliers.
Kole had a .519 attack percentage with Burton hitting .516. The Cavaliers had a .355 hitting percentage to Louisville’s .206. Riccolo led the defensive efforts with 10 digs.
The Cavaliers will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. when they take on Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind.
