Virginia Travels to Richmond on Wednesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball (2-0) takes on Richmond (0-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at Robins Arena in Richmond, Va.

All of the 2016-17 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA with Channing Poole calling the action. The Cavaliers have opened the season with two victories, including a 103-40 win against Coppin State on Sunday afternoon, and are looking to start the season 3-0 for the fifth time in the last six years. UVA shot 55.6 percent (40-72) against the Eagles, its best shooting game since going 38-of-68 (55.9 percent) against Longwood during the 2014-15 season. The Cavaliers had four games last season shooting 50.0 percent or better from the field.

Virginia’s offense is being led by the first years. Guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leads the team, averaging 17.0 points per game, followed by center Felicia Aiyeotan (Lagos, Nigeria) who is averaging 13.5 points per game in just 15.5 minutes per game. Guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) is tied for third at 10.5 points per game.

Aiyeotan had six blocked shots against Coppin State, bringing her total to 10 this season. She currently leads the ACC in blocked shots and is tied for second in the nation.

UVA leads the all-time series against the Spiders, 15-3. Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle was the head coach at Richmond for three seasons (2002-05), leading the Spiders to three 20-win seasons and a berth in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Boyle is 3-0 against the Spiders since coming to Virginia.

Last year, UVA faced Richmond in the Cavalier Classic Tournament, downing the Spiders 71-51 in which the Cavaliers used their size advantage to gain a 30-18 scoring edge in the paint and a +12 rebounding margin. Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) had a double-double with 13 points and a then-career-high 14 rebounds. Aliyah Huland El (Randolph, N.J.) was 6-of-9 shooting, scoring 13 points.

Richmond lost its season opener to Columbia, 65-58, on Sunday. The Spiders trailed by as many as 13 in the first quarter but managed to cut the Columbia lead down to just three on multiple occasions but were unable to take the extra step down the stretch. Micaela Parson scored 20 points to lead all scorers and Janelle Hubbard pitched in 16 on 6-12 shooting.

Richmond was selected to finish seventh in the preseason A10 poll (out of 14 teams) while Hubbard was named to the Preseason Atlantic 10 First Team.

The Cavaliers will be back at home on Sunday, Nov. 20, hosting Rutgers at 6 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
