NOTRE DAME, Ind.-The No. 19 Virginia men’s track and field team notched five top-4 finishes at the Notre Dame Invitational Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Ind.

Redshirt sophomore Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened up his 2017 season with a win in the shot put with a mark of 18.44m (60′ 6.25″), while sophomore Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) was third with a distance of 17.35m (56′ 11.25″), seventh on UVA’s all-time list.

Freshman Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) finished third in the long jump with a mark of 7.38m (24′ 2.75″), which is eighth on UVA’s all-time list and third on the freshman list. Redshirt junior Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) placed fifth with a personal-best distance of 7.25m (23′ 9.5″).

Sophomore Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) placed fourth in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 20.71m (67′ 11.5″), which is second on UVA’s all-time list. The mark is a new Icelandic national record.

“It’s an exciting time,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “Each week you can see the growth. Hilmar opening with a personal best in the weight throw and the overall progress made by our field-event student-athletes lends itself to what is to come.”

In the mile, freshman AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) placed fourth in 4:07.63, while junior Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) was sixth in the 800 meters in 1:54.20. In the 3,000 meters, sophomores Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.) and Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) finished fifth and sixth in 8:24.06 and 8:24.54, respectively.

The 4x400m relay team of sophomore Jake Dixon (Falmouth, Maine), Carrington, redshirt sophomore Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) and freshman Noah Toney (West Orange, N.J.) came in fifth in 3:16.97.

“Having the opportunity to compete and experience the facility, hotel, etc. where the ACC Indoor Championships will be held adds to the student-athletes’ level of confidence and familiarity when we come back in late February,” Fetzer said. “We use the first three meets of the indoor season as preparation for later in the season and stagger when individuals open up their first competition. Next week at Liberty, we will have another wave start the season so when we make the trip to Boston we will be at full strength.”

The Cavaliers return to action next Saturday (Jan. 28) for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
