Tallahassee, Fla. – The No. 44 Virginia women’s golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule with an eighth-place finish at the Florida State Match-Up tournament. The Cavaliers shot 24-over 888 including a final round of 6-over 294. Fourth-ranked Florida State won by 10 shots, finishing at 27-under 837 while No. 13 South Carolina was second at 847.

Junior Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.), playing in her first tournament of the season, led the Cavaliers with a 13th-place finish. She shot even par 216 including a 2-over 74 on Sunday. It was the best tournament score of her career. Her opening round 69 was the lowest 18-hole score as a collegiate.

Freshman Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tied her career low score during the final round, shooting 2-under 70, to improve to 33rd place. She finished at 6-over 222.

UVA senior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) posted a 75 during the final round and was 39th overall at 224. Sophomore Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) had a 76 on Sunday and was 43rd at 227. Sophomore Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) rebounded with a 75 during the final 18 holes, her best single-round effort during the weekend, and placed 54th at 233.

Sophomore Ju Hee Bae (Chantilly, Va.), who competed as an individual, placed 60th at 236 in her first college tournament.

In addition to traditional collegiate scoring, the tournament featured a unique team scoring component. The participating teams were paired in twosomes during the first two rounds and play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes consist of partners playing together. The match-up portion of the tournament was determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total.

At the end of the tournament, the partners with the lowest score won the Match-Up championship.

UVA and South Carolina finished second in the match-up competition at 1076. Florida State and Texas A&M won the match-up at 1047.

The Cavaliers return to action Feb. 19-21 at the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans.
