Cavaliers Playing in Futures Tournaments

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two Virginia men’s tennis players are competing this week at two separate Futures Tournaments. Senior J.C. Aragone is in Canada, playing at the $25,000 Gatineau Futures Tournament. Junior Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) is in Florida at the $15,000 Orlando Futures.
Aragone made his way through qualifying to earn a spot in the Gatineau main draw, toppling Jordan Sweeney (6-1, 6-0) and Tim Kopinski (6-1, 6-1). In the main draw, Aragone downed Canadian Philip Bester 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to advance to the round of 16. Bester is currently ranked No. 349 in the world. Aragone will faced the No. 8 seed, Raymond Sarmiento, currently ranked No. 339, in Thursday in the second round, picking up a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory to advance to the quarterfinals. Aragone’s run came to a halt on Friday in the quarters, falling 6-2, 7-6(7) to top-seeded Gleb Sakharov.
Altamirano was awarded a wild card into the main draw in Orlando, where he fell 7-5, 6-1 to No. 2 seed Sekou Bangoura. Bangoura is currently ranked No. 271.
Senior Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) competed in the qualifying tournament in Orlando, falling in a tight match first match, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(5) to Esteban Bruna.
