Annapolis, Md. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving team won four events on the first day of the ECAC Championships Friday (March 3) in Annapolis, Md.

The Cavaliers started off the evening with a win the women’s 500-yard freestyle. Junior Jessie Gvozdas (Henrico, Va.) took first place with a time of 4:51.88 and senior teammate Maddy Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) placed fifth at 4:54.61.

In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Mary Pelton (Towson, Md.) touched the wall first in a time of 2:02.38.

The 50 free was won by junior Dina Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.) with a time of 22.65. Senior Audrey Gould (Bethesda, Md.) placed fourth at 23.66.

On the men’s side, junior Omer Tara (Istanbul, Turkey) led UVA to a one-two finish with a winning mark of 4:24.59. Freshman Jason Quinn was the runner-up at 4:25.37.

Other point scorers for the men included sophomore Brandon Goldstein’s third-place showing (1:48.38) in the 200 IM and freshman Henry Keel (Memphis, Tenn.) taking fourth place in the 50 free (20.36)

The action at the ECAC Championships runs through Sunday.
