Christiansburg, Va. – Virginia advanced two divers to the NCAA Championships following the first day of competition at the Zone A Diving Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va.

Freshman Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) qualified on the 3-meter board for the UVA women and first-year Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) advanced on the 1-meter board for the Cavalier men.

Dusel finished fifth in the finals with 605.10 points. UVA junior Corey Johnson (Ambler, Pa.) just missed out on an automatic berth to the NCAAs with a ninth-place finish with 563.50 points. Sophomore Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) finished 11th at 560.60 and sophomore Kirsten Parkinson (Stamford, Conn.) was 17th at 516.05.

Shelton earned the sixth and final automatic berth on the men’s 1-meter with a score of 635.95. Freshmen Samson Miller (Fairfax, Va.) did not advance out of the preliminary round.

The competition runs through Wednesday.

Tuesday’s schedule finds the women competing on the 1-meter board while the men move to the 3-meter stage. The women’s field features 61 divers with 18 advancing to the finals while the men’s competition includes 46 competitors and 18 reach the finals.

Wednesday’s platform diving will see 12 divers reach the finals. The women’s trials include 22 participants while the men’s field is 23 divers.

For Zone A, the top five women’s finishers in the 1-meter, top seven in the 3-meter and top six in the platform qualify for the NCAA Championships. On the men’s side, the top six in the 1-meter, top five in the 3-meter and top four on the platform may advance to nationals.
