Softball's Comeback Falls Short in Game Two

RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite a season-high 17 hits, Virginia (10-15, 2-6 ACC) fell 8-6 to N.C. State (10-16, 4-1 ACC) in game two of a three-game series at Dail Stadium.
The Cavaliers scored the game’s final five runs but had their comeback effort fall short in the top of the seventh inning. Virginia had a hit in every single inning but left a season-high 13 runners on base in the contest.
For the second time this season, junior Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) produced a four-hit game. She finished the night 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. In two games against N.C. State she has six hits in eight at bats (.750) including two doubles and a triple.
After spotting the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead after the first two innings, the Cavaliers began to chip away in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) drove in Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) for Virginia’s first run. An inning later, Olivia Gott (Weston, Fla.) hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season, a two-run, towering drive that cut the NC State lead to 8-3.
Allison Davis also did her job in the circle, retiring six of the last seven N.C. State batters including inducing an inning-ending double play to end the sixth frame. She surrendered just two earned runs in 4.2 innings of relief while striking out two.
The seventh inning three-run rally was fueled by a two-run single by Allison Davis that scored Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) and Tia Mitchell (Clarksburg, Md.). The inning was kept alive by Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) who was down to her last strike before a double into left center scored the Cavaliers’ sixth run.
N.C. State’s Peyton Silverman, yesterday’s winning pitcher, came on to pitch after the first two Cavaliers reached in the top of the seventh. She was able to get the final three outs but not after giving up three hits and an earned run in the process.
Four different Virginia hitters recorded multi-hit games including three-hit performances from Hughes and Ingraham. Labshere went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and an RBI.
The Cavaliers will try and avoid the sweep tomorrow (March 19) at noon in the series finale.
