Greensboro, Ga. – The No. 8 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for fifth place following the opening round of play at the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. The Cavaliers shot 5-under 283 at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee. No. 4 Baylor leads the 15-team field at 14-under 274.

Senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted UVA’s low round, shooting 4-under 68 to finish the day in eighth place. It is the seventh time in nine rounds this spring Bard has shot par or better in a tournament.

Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) also completed the first round below par, carding identical rounds of 71. They are tied for 21st place.

Junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) posted first-round scores of 1-over 73 and are tied for 40th.

The second round of the tournament is set for Monday and the final round takes place Tuesday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
