Charlottesville, Va. ÃÆ’Æ‘¢ÃƒÆ’¢’¬” The No. 18 Virginia men’s golf team opens play at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, La., on Monday, May 15. The 54-hole event runs through Wednesday at the par-72, 7,372-yard University Club. Virginia is the No. 3 seed in the 14-team field. The top five finishers from six NCAA regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

The regional berth marks the 21st time since 1990 the Cavaliers have competed in postseason play. Virginia is looking to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 16th time in its history. Last year, the Cavaliers were fifth at a regional site in Franklin, Tenn., and went on to finish 22nd at the NCAA Championships.

The Virginia lineup features seniors Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.), junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.), sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) and freshmen Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.).

Bard and Stanger, who were named to the All-ACC team earlier this week, lead the Cavaliers in stroke average. Stanger, the ACC individual champion, is first on the team at 70.37 while Bard is second at 71.00. They have combined to be UVa’s top finisher in seven of 11 tournaments this season.

The Cavaliers are paired with No. 1 seed LSU and No. 2 seed Oregon during the opening round. Those teams start play Monday at a.m. from the 1st tee.

The field for the Baton Rouge regional includes (listed by seed): 1. LSU, 2. Oregon, 3. Virginia, 4. Duke, 5. Northwestern, 6. Arkansas, 7. Jacksonville, 8. Kentucky, 9. South Florida, 10. Iowa, 11. Georgia State, 12. Jacksonville State, 13. Loyola (Md.) and 14. Alabama State.
