Walker's 67 Leads Hoos on First Day of Regional Play

Baton Rouge, La – The No. 18 Virginia men’s golf team is in second place after the opening round at the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, La. The Cavaliers shot 6-under 282 and trail only host school LSU. The Tigers, the 2015 NCAA champions, shot 12-under 276 on their home course, the University Club.
Reigning NCAA champion Oregon is in third place at 287 while ACC champion Duke is fourth at 291.
Virginia was led on Monday by junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.), who shot 5-under 67 to finish the first round in second place. Walker’s day included six birdies and a single bogey. He played the back nine at 4-under par. His score was his lowest 18-hole total of the season.
Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) also finished under par for UVA, shooting 2-under 70. He is in sixth place. Sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) shot even par 72 while senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) rounded out UVA’s scoring by finishing at 1-over 73. Walsh is in 11th place while Bard finished the round 19th. Freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) shot 3-over 75 and is in 32nd place.
LSU’s Sam Burns shot 7-under 65 to grab the early lead. Three players are behind Walker in third place at 4-under 68.
The 54-hole regional runs through Wednesday. The top five teams and top individual (not qualifying with a team) advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. A total of six regional sites are used to fill the championship field.
UVA, LSU and Oregon will start their second rounds at 9:15 a.m. CT from the first hole. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
