CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ÃÆ’Æ‘¢ÃƒÆ’¢’¬” Virginia sophomore outfielder Jake McCarthy (Scranton, Pa.) has been named the ACC Player of the Week. It marks his first career ACC Player of the Week distinction.

McCarthy had a tremendous week for the Cavaliers, going 12-for-21 (.571) with a home run and six RBI while recording four straight multiple-hit games as Virginia went 3-1, including a series win over Georgia Tech. He recorded his first career two-home run game Thursday in the series opener at Georgia Tech and followed it up Friday with his first career four-hit game.

Six of McCarthy’s 12 hits went for extra bases.

Virginia opens play in the 2017 ACC Baseball Championship at Thursday (May 25) against Duke at Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, Ky. After winning their last six conference series, the Cavaliers (41-13) earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament.

Virginia plays the ninth-seeded Blue Devils at 11 a.m. Thursday and also takes on No. 5 seed Clemson at 11 a.m. Friday as part of Pool D. The Blue Devils and Tigers play at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
