Sugar Grove, Ill. – The No. 18 Virginia men’s golf team opened play at the NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., on Friday. Because of a three-hour delay due to heavy rains during the tournament’s afternoon session, the Cavaliers did not complete the round.

At the time play was suspended for darkness, UVA stood at 7-over par with players having completed between 8 and 10 holes. UVA was in 23rd place at the time play stopped.

Senior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) had UVA’s best score, standing at even par after eight holes. Senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was at 1-over while junior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.), sophomore Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) and freshman Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) were all at 3-over par.

Of the teams that finished their first rounds, Auburn leads the 30-team field at 6-under 282. Vanderbilt, which played in the afternoon wave, was at 8-under par but had not completed its round.

Virginia will resume its first round on Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. CT and then begin its second round later in the morning.

The tournament format includes 54 holes of stroke play through Sunday. Following three rounds of competition, the top 15 teams, along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team, will advance for one additional day of stroke play on Monday to determine the eight-team field for match play. The NCAA individual champion is scheduled to be determined after 72 holes of stroke play.
