BUDAPEST, Hungary- Former Virginia swimmer Leah Smith (Class of 2017) captured a silver medal in the 400m freestyle at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Sunday (July 23).

Smith recorded a time of 4:01.54 in the event. Her performance earned her a silver medal.

With the help of Smith, the U.S. national team captured the top two times in the 400m freestyle. Katie Ledecky earned gold with a time of 3:58.34. She broke the championship record with the swim.

Also swimming, former men’s swimmer Yannick Kaeser (Class of 2016) competed for Switzerland in the 100m breaststroke. Kaeser recorded a time of 1:00.53, finishing 24th in the event.

Smith will compete in the 1500m freestyle tomorrow in day two of the FINA World Championships.
