Charlottesville, Va. – The No. 15 Virginia men’s golf team will start its 2017-18 season this weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga. The three-day, 54-hole tournament runs Friday through Sunday at the par 72, 7,012-yard The Farm Golf Club.

UVA won last year’s tournament at 31-under 833. Virginia’s 54-hole total broke the event’s scoring record by eight shots.

The 15-team field includes Alabama, Auburn, California, Chattanooga, Clemson, Dalton State, Florida, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, LSU, North Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Troy and the Hoos. UVA is paired with LSU and Florida during the opening round. Those three teams are slated to tee off starting at 9:30 a.m. from the first tee. . The Cavaliers enter the event ranked No. 15 in the Bushnell/Golfweek preseason standings.

UVA’s season-opening lineup features junior honorable mention All-American Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.), senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.), sophomore Nathan Chuwait (Herndon, Va.), senior Connor Messick (Oak Hill, Va.), sophomore Luke Schaap (Potomac, Md.) and redshirt sophomore Ashton Poole will compete as an individual.

Walsh finished sixth at last year’s tournament, shooting 8-under 208. Schaap was 11th in his collegiate debut (-6, 210) and Walker was 42nd at 220.
