Champion Hoo

Congratulations to former #UVAMTEN All-American and NCAA Singles champion Ryan Shane who picked up not one but two trophies this weekend, winning both the singles and doubles titles at the Laguna Niguel Futures Tournament in California. Shane partnered with former Tar Heel Ronnie Schneider to win the doubles title on Friday and then finished off the weekend with a singles crown on Sunday. It was the second doubles title of his pro career and third singles championship.

Former #UVAMGolf All-American Denny McCarthy guaranteed himself PGA Tour privileges  following Sunday’s final round of the Tour’s DAP Championship in Beachwood, Ohio. McCarthy tied for 17th place and helped secure his position on the Tour Finals’ top-25 money earnings list that is used to earn standing on next year’s PGA Tour.  The Tour Championship is the final event of the season and takes place Sept. 28-Oct. 1 in Atlantic Beach, Fla.

Congratulations to former #UVAMBB standout Akil Mitchell who was signed this weekend by the Brooklyn Nets. There are now six former Cavaliers with NBA contracts as Mitchell joins London Perrantes (San Antonio), Malcolm Brogdon (Milwaukee), Justin Anderson (Philadelphia), Joe Harris (Brooklyn) and Mike Scott (Washington).

The biggest story of the weekend, of course, took place at Scott Stadium on Sunday night. The University and the Charlottesville community came together to watch A Concert for Charlottesville. As Stevie Wonder (who joined Dave Matthews on stage to close out the show as a surprise guest) put it, “this is truly the example that love can win.” Other artists included Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland of Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande, Chris Stapleton, Pharrell Williams, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, The Roots and Cage the Elephant. Timberlake tweeted this thank you to Charlottesville. Many Virginia student-athletes, including #UVABase pitcher Bennett Sousa, Instagrammed shots from the concert, moments of love, unity and fantastic music.
