Sugar Grove, Ill. – Virginia redshirt sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) sank a 45-foot eagle putt on his final hole to tie for first place at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Poole’s finish helped UVA to a second-place showing in its second event of the season.

Virginia posted the best final round score, shooting 11-under 277, for a 54-hole total of 19-under 845. Marquette took top honors at 832.

Poole’s eagle was one of two he recorded during Monday’s round. After starting his final 18 holes with a bogey on the first hole, he made eagle on No. 2 before reeling off eight consecutive pars. He played his final four holes at 4-under par to catch Marquette’s Oliver Farrell and share first-place honors.

Poole finished the final round at 5-under 67 and posted a 54-hole total of 14-under 202. He opened the tournament with a 7-under 65 and shot 2-under 70 during his second round. Poole made four eagles during his two days of play on Rich Harvest Farms.

Poole is the second Cavalier to win the event. Former UVA standout Denny McCarthy took home top honors there in 2012.

Poole was joined near the top of the leaderboard by junior teammate Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.). He also shot 67 during the final round and moved up to fourth place overall at 7-under 209. Senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) also finished under par, shooting 1-under 71 for a final tally of 1-under 215.

Sophomore Andrew Orischak (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) placed 33rd at 4-over 20. He shot 73 on Monday. Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) finished 57th in his collegiate debut. He shot 72 during the final round for a 54-hole total of 226. Also competing in his first college tournament was freshman WeiWei Gao (Cebu, Philippines). Playing as an individual competitor, he posted a final-round score of 72 for a two-day total of 223 that placed him 47th.

Virginia returns to action Oct. 13-15 when it competes in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
