CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 3 Virginia field hockey team (9-1, 2-0 ACC) returns to Atlantic Coast Conference action this weekend when it plays at No. 13 Wake Forest (5-4, 2-1 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Virginia has won a conference-best eight games in a row and has shut out each of its last three opponents, including a 6-0 victory over now-ranked No. 23 Pacific on Monday afternoon. The last time a team scored on the Cavaliers was a goal by Estelle Hughes 13:26 into the game against William & Mary on Sept. 15, giving the Cavaliers’ defense a span of 266:34 without allowing a goal.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) leads the conference in saves per game, averaging 4.60 stops. She is second in save percentage at 79.3 percent. Freshman goalie Lauren Hausheer (West Windsor, N.J.) made her third appearance of the season against Pacific, playing the final 25:46 of the game, making five saves. Hausheer has yet to allow a goal this season.
The Cavalier offense continues to lead the nation in every offensive category including points per game (16.7), goals per game (6.0), assists per game (4.7), penalty corners per game (10.8) and scoring margin (+4.8). The Cavaliers also have the top two goal scorers in the nation in senior midfielder Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Pien Dicke (Den Haag, Netherlands).
Vittese has led the nation in scoring since the first game of the season, averaging 2.0 goals per game and 5.1 points per contest. She ranks fourth in assists at 1.1 per game, but continues to lead the ACC in that category. Vittese comes into the game with a career-best 20 goals this season with 11 assists for 51 points. Vittese has 182 points in her career, which is tied for third in the Virginia record book with Elly Buckley (2010-13).
Dicke is second in the nation in goals per game (1.5) and is third in points (3.40 per game). Dicke was named the ACC Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts in the win over No. 8 Boston College, scoring two goals with an assist in the 3-0 victory. Since earning her first career ACC honor, Dicke scored a hat trick in the victory over Pacific, her fourth hat trick of the season. Dicke is one three-goal performance shy of tying the Virginia single-season mark for hat tricks set by Meridith Thorpe in 1996.
Wake Forest suffered its first ACC loss last Friday, falling in a shootout at No. 16 Louisville. The Demon Deacons fell behind by a goal in the first and second half, but rallied to tie the score both times. With the game tied, 2-2, heading into overtime, neither side produced a goal over the next 30 minutes and the overtime periods ended in a 2-2 tie. In the penalty shootout, the Deacs missed all four of their attempts and the Cardinals converted twice to take the match. Wake has defeated both North Carolina (3-1) and Syracuse (2-1, OT) this season. Jule Grahoff leads the team with eight goals and 19 points.
The Cavaliers return to Turf Field the next weekend, hosting No. 5 North Carolina (9-2, 2-1 ACC) on Friday, Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. and Drexel (4-6) on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all of Virginia’s regular-season home field hockey games.
