CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Members of the Virginia women’s tennis team competed on both coasts Friday (Oct. 6) with players playing in the ITA All-American Championships and in the Wake Forest Invitational.

Sophomore Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) competed in the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships, splitting her two matches, while five more players opened play at the Wake Forest Invitational.

Johanson, who is ranked No. 34 in the ITA singles rankings, won her first match of the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 26 Mia Horvit of South Carolina. She then dropped her second match, falling in a three-set battle with No. 7 Melissa Lord of Stanford, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. The loss ended Johanson’s run at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Five players opened singles play at the Wake Forest Invitational, while Virginia also had two doubles teams compete on the first day.

Senior Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia), junior Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.), and freshmen Lizzie Baker (Washington) and Maya Das (Potomac, Md.) all picked up wins in singles play on Friday. Sophomore Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.) dropped her opening match in a three-set battle.

Radosavljevic defeated Margo Decker of Kansas State by a score of 6-1, 6-4, while Susi picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win over Natalia Perry of William & Mary. The freshmen both battled through three sets with Baker defeating Sandra Anglesjo of Appalachian State, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Das defeating Ally Sexton of Davidson, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4. Kansas State’s Carolina Costamagna defeated Favero 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The two Virginia doubles teams played two matches each on Friday. The paring of Baker and Favero dropped the first match of the day, 8-6, over the duo of Ellie Burns and Megan Kauffman from Winthrop. The Cavalier pairing then won the second match of the day, 8-3, over Jillian Milano and Madison Riley from Wright State.

Virginia’s other doubles team of Radosavljevic and Susi dropped both matches on the day. The Cavalier pairing fell to Samantha Aramas and Anna Catharine Feaster of Davidson, 8-7, in the first match, before dropping an 8-6 match to Karoline Haller and Haily Morgan of Wright State.

Play continues at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday.
