PRINCETON, N.J. – The Virginia men’s tennis team has five players competing at the Farnsworth Invitational, being held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 6-8, at the Lenz Tennis Center in Princeton, N.J.
Kyrylo Tsygura (North Potomac, Md.) picked up a pair of singles victories on Saturday to advance to the final of the A-draw. Tsygura began with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Thomas Sevel of Temple and finished the day with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Monmouth’s Alberto Giuffrida.
Junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) also picked up a pair of singles victories in the A-draw, downing Adam Chan of Farleigh Dickinson and Tomi Antoljak of NJIT, both by a score of 6-0, 6-1.
Tsygura and Lizen will play one another in the finals of the A-draw on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
Redshirt freshman Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) fell 7-5, 6-4 to Alan Nunez of St. John’s in the quarterfinals in singles of the B-draw.
In doubles Lizen and Alhaqbani won three doubles matches to win the A bracket consolation draw, downing tandems from Farleigh Dickinson and Lehigh before defeating George Cooper and Bryant Born 8-1 in the final.
Freshmen Jefferson Dockter (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jerome Romualdez (Manila, Philippines) downed Miki Nobuzawa and Youssef Sader of Farleigh Dickinson 8-2, before getting edged in the C-draw consolation semifinals by NJIT’s George Svensson and Pablo Arrutia.
Players from 16 teams will be competing at the tournament with four singles draws of 32 players and two doubles draws of 32 pairs. Bryant, Buffalo, Columbia, Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Hofstra, Lehigh, Marist, Middlebury, Monmouth, NJIT, Princeton, St. John’s and Temple will all have players competing in the field.
