Four Cavaliers Advance In Singles At ITA Atlantic Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four members of the Virginia women’s tennis team advanced in singles play and two doubles teams advanced through the main draws at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Saturday (Oct. 14). The event is being played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at Virginia Tech.
Sophomore Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), joined seniors Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) and Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia) in picking up wins on the first day of play in the main draw. The four Cavaliers will play again in the round of 32 on Sunday (Oct. 13).
Johanson is the top-seeded player in the event, while Mercer is seeded fourth, Radosavljevic is seeded 13th and Gullickson is seeded 15th.
In addition to the singles wins, two of the three Virginia doubles teams also advanced on Saturday, picking up two wins each. Both advancing doubles teams for the Cavaliers will play in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Singles play will continue with two rounds of matches on Sunday afternoon following the morning’s doubles matches.
The event winners in singles and doubles advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.
Through a combination of on-court competition and at-large berths and wild cards, there are several ways for student-athletes to qualify for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held November 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
