Alpharetta, Ga. – The Virginia men’s golf team is tied for eighth place following the opening round of competition at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate. The Cavaliers shot 3-under 285 and share eighth place with TCU and Stanford. Oklahoma State grabbed the first-round lead at 11-under 277.

Virginia was led by freshman WeiWei Gao (Cebu, Philippines) who posted a career-best score of 3-under 69 and is in 12th place. It is the first time this season Gao is competing for the Cavaliers as a scoring player. His previous two outings, he was entered as an individual and did not count as part of UVA’s team score.

Junior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) is in 25th place at 1-under 71. Freshman Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) is 38th at 72, senior Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is 44th at 73 and sophomore Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) is 61st after shooting 75.

The second round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship will take place Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
